St. Peter School COVID-19 Policies and Procedures

St. Peter School must comply with the District of Columbia Department of Health (DC Health) Guidance for Schools. This includes following guidance on masking, vaccination, isolation/exposure and return to school, and staying home when sick. All policies and procedures are subject to change with updated guidance from DC Health or with significant changes in COVID-19 community levels.

St. Peter School COVID-19 Policies and Procedures are based on two overarching goals:

1.    Prioritize the Health and wellness of the students, faculty, and staff of St. Peter School.
2.    Ensure the school preserves in-person learning for students and strives to return to pre-pandemic programming and other activities to the greatest extent possible.

Please reference the St. Peter School COVID-19 Policies and Procedures for full details of the following summary. For questions, contact Nurse Ackerman at 202-544-1618.

Resource Guide Links (Updated March 18, 2022)

  • Vaccination

All faculty/staff and students ages 12 and older are required to receive the full course of COVID-19 vaccination to be in compliance with DC Health guidelines.

    • Any student who turns 12 during or after the start of the 2022-23 school year shall have 70 calendar days from their birthday to receive the COVID-19 vaccination.
    • All students ages 3-11 should receive the full course of COVID-19 vaccination.

All students ages 5 and older should receive the updated “booster” dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if eligible to enhance the level of protection in our community (e.g., students aged 5-11 years, at least 5 months following their initial regimen of vaccines).

St. Peter School recognizes the need for religious/moral/medical exception and will remain in compliance with the ADW process.

  • Masking

Masking is currently optional, both indoors and outdoors, with limited exceptions. Masking will be required if DC Health mandates it for HIGH COVID-19 community levels.

Masking is recommended for one-on-one interactions in close proximity and required if symptoms become present during the school day. In these cases, a mask will be provided by the school.

Masking is required for individuals returning to in-person learning following isolation or COVID-19 exposure (through Day 10).

When required, masks should be well fitting, covering the nose and chin and sitting snugly on the face with no gaps.

  • Staying Home When Sick

Faculty, staff, and students must stay home when sick, and school policy requires dismissal if they become sick during the school day. If symptoms are consistent with COVID-19, they must follow testing protocols (as outlined in SPS COVID-19 Policies and Procedures).

Symptoms check at home and Protocol to follow:

    • Individuals must stay home with any one of the following symptoms: fever of 100.4 F or greater; new or worsening cough; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; loss of taste or smell.
    • Individuals must stay home with and two or more of the following symptoms: chills, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.
    • Symptom Checker categories remain consistent with Spring 2022 practice. As of August 31, 2022, DC Health is still evaluating possible changes to this list of symptoms. SPS Policy shall be updated to reflect changes as they are released.
    • When individuals are required to stay home, they must take a rapid antigen test and contact Nurse Ackerman / email attendance@stpeterschooldc.org for further instructions. Please include a photo of the rapid antigen test result in the email. If a rapid antigen test is negative, students may be evaluated by a healthcare provider, OR receive a NAAT/PCR test, OR proceed with serial antigen testing under Nurse Ackerman’s guidance.
  • Physical Distancing

Spacing is no longer required. Activities, meals, and events will continue to be held outdoors when possible.

  • Exposure/Isolation

Asymptomatic close contacts, regardless of vaccination status, are not required to quarantine and must mask through Day 10.

Individuals who test positive must isolate for 5 days from symptom onset (or from the date of positive test if asymptomatic) and may return on Day 6, if fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and symptoms improving, masking through Day 10.

See SPS COVID-19 Policies and Procedures for additional details.

  • School/HSA Sponsored Events

School activities and events with in-person attendance by parents, guardians, or other persons external to the school will be conducted consistent with DC Health guidance. Masks may be removed for both indoor and outdoor events.

  • Holidays with high liklihood of Travel

During periods of Low community spread, screening tests are not required. See SPS COVID-19 Policies and Procedures for details. Any updated guidance will be communicated to parents with enough lead time to comply with requirements.
